Nevertheless: The Call to Wake Up, Wise Up, and Rise Up
28 February 2021
Nevertheless, God’s solid foundation stands firm, sealed with this inscription: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness.” – 2 Timothy 2:19 NIV
Our world is in uproar. Fear rages on. Misrepresentations of good, acceptable living abound. It’s easier to conform to the standard-setters around us than to the Bible.
Nevertheless—God’s firm foundation of truth remains.
We cannot pursue ungodly living while still calling on His Name.
We cannot call holy and good, that which God has called unholy and wicked.
We cannot conform to the world and expect to be transformed by grace.
Are we the Church led by the Spirit, or are we indulging the war cries of the world? We have an obligation to be Light in the darkness. To be the ones standing up, set apart. To turn away from wickedness, not embrace it, despite the fear of offending.
Nevertheless Means Nevertheless
It should not change our determination if the world says love is love, or that black lives matter, or that it’s a woman’s right to choose when we have God’s Word that shows us His righteousness, clearly defined:
—That intimacy between two people was specifically designed and all other indulgences are clearly immoral misrepresentations of love.
—That God has declared all lives matter, and that race and age and time inside or outside the womb is irrelevant in His eyes.
Does it feel difficult, or even scary, to stand up for what’s right, to go against the flow? Absolutely!
Does it feel convenient to gratify earthly desires like conformity and selfishness? You bet!
But we haven’t been given a spirit of timidity or fear! (2 Timothy 1:7) The Holy Spirit gives us power, love, and self-discipline/sound minds. Power to stand. Love to turn the other cheek when persecuted for faith. Discipline to judge truth from untruth, to do away with confusion.
Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires…You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ...
Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it. For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live. For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God — Romans 8:5,9,12-14
God, who searches hearts, knows whom are His own.
In Romans 13 Paul talks about both submission and love, then concludes with these words,
And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light...clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh. (11-12, 14)
It’s time to wake up:
eyes open, seeing.
ears open, hearing.
It’s time to wise up:
Eating Bread of Life rather than cotton candy messages.
Fearing the Lord, which is the beginning of understanding.
It’s time to rise up:
Denouncing fear, standing for truth.
Walking out faith in strength and victory.
Declaring good news from the rooftops.
This is the cry. Not because it’s easy. No. Because it’s good and right and true. And Jesus told us that in patiently enduring, in holding fast to His Word, He will spare us from the hour of tribulation that is coming. (Revelation 3:10-11)
It’s coming. The atmosphere is thick with the fog of perversion, evil, anxiety, and fear.
Nevertheless, He who promised is faithful.
It’s time. Time to Wake up, Wise up, and Rise up. It’s time to be Light in the darkness. It’s time to Look Up, because our redemption draws near!
