The Blessed Pilgrim

My soul yearns, even faints,
    for the courts of the Lord;
my heart and my flesh cry out
    for the living God.
– Psalm 84:2 NIV

Blessed are those whose strength is in you,
whose hearts are set on pilgrimage.
– Psalm 84:5 NIV

As the chaos in our world heightens, I find myself yearning more and more for the courts of the Lord.

Sound silly? Weird?

David understood…His heart and flesh cried out for the Living God, and he was even called a man after God’s heart.

As in, chasing after God’s heart. Longing to know Him more. Seeking Him in and despite all that he was walking through. Trusting His goodness. Believing His Promises are yes and amen.

We are blessed when our hearts are set on pilgimage.

What does that even mean?

We are favored, joyful, and content, when we live from an understanding that this world is not our final destination. It’s not the be-all, end-all.

Death, pain, and sorrow sting less. Fear can’t consume. Our hope is in something bigger, something greater. Our eyes see beyond the here and now, and we can carry on in strength.

Let it be so for you and for me.

THE PILGRIM

The Pilgrim walks with intentional steps

Eyes open and gazing up

She endures the changing weather

The wind, the rain, the storms

With grace

Not because they are easy

Not because the elements evade her

No. Indeed they connect.

Yet

Her hope is steadfast in the promise

What’s yet to come outweighs all this

She knows, with certainty

Whose she is and where she’s heading

She waves her hands

Smiling brightly

Serving

Giving

Loving

Not because she’s free from suffering

Not because she’s held aloof

No. Indeed the pain is felt

With paramount intensity.

But she knows the One who’s offered freely

To carry the weight, so she can carry on.

And that gift is treasured

Cherished with utmost gratitude.

She offers it to Him

Lets it go.

She clings to the One that sustains her

With an easy yoke

And light burden.

His grace is sufficient

And His tender voice is ever calling her

Home.
